October Mystery CAL with Freddy Goat
Share

This October, we’ll be crocheting together for the 27th time! 🤯🥳
Love surprises, amigurumi, and connecting with like-minded crocheters? Then you won’t want to miss this event!
What is a Mystery Crochet Along?
A Mystery CAL (Crochet Along) is a fun digital event where you discover a brand-new amigurumi pattern, piece by piece, alongside a group of fellow makers over a set period of time.
This year, during October, we’re celebrating autumn and the spooky season with a new animal designed by Freddy Goat!
Below, you’ll find all the important details: abbreviations, color keys, and what to prepare before the CAL starts on October 9th. Welcome to the party!
Who are Freddy Goat?
We are Tere and Kath, the two-woman crochet design team behind Freddy Goat. We blend our love of illustration, literature, graphic design, and all things kawaii to create amigurumi patterns that are a bit off the beaten path. Between us, we have many years of crochet experience and a deep appreciation for storytelling in all forms. Our creative influences range from picture books and puppetry to vintage toys, child-hood candies, anime, and pop-culture through the ages - anything with personality, texture, color, or a good dose of weirdness.
What we love most about designing is the play involved: the endless experimentation, problem-solving, and happy accidents that come with turning an idea into a finished piece. We enjoy sweating the details, trying out new stitches and joining methods, fine-tuning shaping, and inventing construction techniques that make our designs more expressive and - hopefully - fun to make. Whether it’s a monster with a sunburn or a dandified faun, we aim to create characters that feel like they belong in their own little worlds.
You can find our work in previous issues of Simply Crochet, Crochet World, and Crochet Now magazines, on Instagram @freddy_goat_crochet, and at freddygoat.com, where we share everything from silly seasonal creatures to low-sew crochet pastries and our ongoing Fredibles food series (first published here in Simply Crochet Magazine as the Veg Patch Pals!).
We have big dreams for the future - including collaborative workshops, envelop-pushing patterns, and maybe even a Freddy Goat book one day. In the meantime, we are so thrilled to bring you this mystery CAL in collaboration with Garnknuten. We really hope you enjoy making it as much as we enjoyed designing it for you!

A Quick Look Back
Last autumn (2025), we crocheted Konrad the Koala together!
It all started in December 2018 when I hosted my very first CAL with a small group of amigurumi enthusiasts. We made Ralf the Moose, and he stole many hearts that winter. Since then, our crochet alongs have grown into a beloved tradition, with over 5,000 people joining in so far!

Tips for Success
- Make sure you crochet pretty tight all the way, so you don’t get large holes between the stitches. If you crochet loosely, I suggest you test a smaller hook size (eg, 2.50 mm) so that the stuffing doesn‘t show once you‘ve filled the toy.
- All parts will be worked in spirals (if the pattern doesn’t say otherwise) - so you don‘t have to think about closing the rounds.
- A stitch marker can help you keep track of the beginning of your rows.
